We are looking for interesting fiction, poetry, essays, and multimedia work from all over the world. However, preference is given to writers, artists, and subject matter with some connection to the Birmingham area. We aren't going to tell you what to do. Just do it. And send it to us.
STR does not currently pay contributors. We aren't making any money from this either, so don't be mad about it. You retain all the rights to your work.
Some general notes:
* Please allow more time than you might think reasonable for a response.
* If your work is accepted elsewhere before we get back to you, please let us know.
* If your work has been published elsewhere before, we aren't interested in it.
Fiction/Essays/Plays
We are interested in literary fiction, experimental fiction, flash fiction, essays and one-act plays, especially work that has a new take on Southern tradition or has Southern themes. That being said, we are not especially interested in traditional Southern fiction. See our manifesto if you don’t understand the distinction. For essays, we are looking specifically for interesting takes on the Southern experience, especially if it specifically relates to arts and culture in Birmingham specifically.
People generally don’t like to read long things on a web page. With that in mind, please keep your stories to fewer than 3,000 words. Fewer than 2,000 would be even better. Plays should be no more than 20 pages. Do not send in more than one story or play at a time.
Poetry
We like prose poems as well as many other styles. Please read some of the poetry we have published in the past before submitting.Poems should not be epic. You may send up to three poems. Please put all poems in a single Word document.
Mutlimedia Art
We are very interested in posting more multimedia content here. Experimental short videos, digital photography, songs… Really we are open to almost anything that can be delivered in a digital format. If you have some type of multimedia art that you think fits our general themes and interests, send it to us.We are also currently taking submissions for illustrations to include in our upcoming anthology. Illustrations should be inspired by or related to a specific piece we have published. Please indicate intentions in your cover letter.
